Will AT&T Try To Crash the Sprint/SoftBank Party?

Yesterday, Sprint moved to acquire a majority stake in Clearwire (CLWR) in advance of SoftBank acquiring a majority stake in Sprint. Despite some earlier speculation that SoftBank might have strategies that don’t include CLWR,  and despite disappointment from investors that Sprint won’t spend the extra bucks to acquire CLWR in its entirety, the move was pretty much expected. One of the main obstacles to Sprint in recent years has been its occasionally testy relationship with CLWR, and difficulties the two companies have had negotiating terms for Sprint’s use of CLWR’s spectrum and network.

Rumors of Apple Set-Top Box a Reminder of Thwarted Innovation

The Wall Street Journal has run two recent reports that describe Apple's plan to roll out a cable set-top box. There have been rumors about this for years. Back in 2007, Steve Jobs showed a level of familiarity with obscure cable technology that would suggest that Apple engineers were looking into this kind of product back then. But Jobs was repelled by the janky technology, and instead, Apple introduced a pure streaming device--the AppleTV--that did not interact with cable TV content. But most of the most valuable content is still available only on cable, or on cable first. Lots of people seem to love the AppleTV, but there's a reason why Apple still describes it as a "hobby."

UMG/EMI: The Next Innovation Bottleneck

While much attention has focused on whether European antitrust regulators will allow the major label Universal to buy one of its competitors, EMI, the proposed merger has also attracted the attention of US antitrust authorities in the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and Senate. In the US context, this merger bears some important similarities to recent proceedings like the Comcast/NBCU merger and the failed AT&T/T-Mobile merger.

Craigslist Takes Aim at Website Developers

Craigslist, a company which markets itself as being a public service rather than a commercial enterprise, has filed a lawsuit against two developers who created services making it easier to use. The New York Times ran an article on Sunday describing Craigslist’s suit against Padmapper, a website that allows users to browse listings from Craigslist and other housing websites by their location on a map, and 3Taps, the company that provides PadMapper with its Craigslist data.  According to the Times, founder Craig Newmark claims that Craigslist only objects to such sites when they increase the load on the Craigslist servers, but 3Taps and PadMapper avoided this conflict by using the Google- and Bing-cached versions of the listings.
