Get ready to celebrate the visionaries shaping our digital future!

We’re excited to announce that the 2025 Annual IP3 Awards will take place on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington, D.C. The evening begins at 6:30 PM.

Public Knowledge hosts the Annual IP3 Awards to recognize the outstanding leaders and innovators who have made significant contributions in the three areas of IP: Intellectual Property, Information Policy, and Internet Protocol. The awards help champion the advocates working diligently on behalf of the public interest to help everyone connect and communicate.

Join us in celebrating these remarkable individuals:

    • Internet Protocol Award: Dr. Joseph Lorenzo Hall, Distinguished Technologist at the Internet Society, a global charity that promotes the development of the internet as a global technical infrastructure, a resource to enrich people’s lives, and a force for good in society. Hall leads the Safe and Secure Internet portfolio at the Internet Society, including advocacy promoting end-to-end encryption, guiding constructive internet policy, and defending the internet at a variety of organizations including the United Nations, the Networked and Distributed System Security (NDSS) Symposium, and the Internet Society Amicus Program. Hall is part of the leadership team, ensuring that the Internet Society remains relevant and impactful while striving for excellence. Hall also contributes substantive technical, legal, and policy expertise to the Internet Society’s programs as an individual contributor, interfacing externally with supporters, industry, academics, and technologists.
    • Intellectual Property Award: Sarah Jeong is a trained lawyer, journalist, and author known for her work on law, technology, and internet culture. She is currently the deputy features editor at The Verge. Previously, she worked as a writer for The New York Times and Vice Motherboard. She is also the author of “The Internet of Garbage,” a book about speech policy and content moderation. Her years of coverage on the intersection of technology and copyright law have helped to educate the public on the challenges and benefits of balancing copyright law in a digital age.
    • Information Policy Award: Dr. Alondra Nelson, renowned academic, policy advisor, and writer, for her transformative research and leadership in science, technology, and social inequality. Dr. Nelson is the Harold F. Linder Professor at the Institute for Advanced Study, an independent research center in Princeton, New Jersey, where she founded and leads the Science, Technology, and Social Values Lab. As a policy advisor, Dr. Nelson has provided guidance to local, state, federal, and international governments, legislators, civil society, and others, and served in 2023 and 2024 on the United Nations’ High-Level Advisory Body on Artificial Intelligence. She was invited to address heads of state, CEOs, NGO leaders, and members of civil society at the February 2025 international AI Action Summit in France on three fallacies in our approach to AI, asserting we can create AI systems that expand opportunity rather than power.
    • This year, we’re presenting a President’s Award each to Former FTC Commissioner Alvaro Bedoya and FTC Commissioner Rebecca Kelly Slaughter for their steadfast commitment to consumer protection and fair competition in the digital age. Both commissioners have been advocates and symbols for the important power of independent agencies and the constitutional balance of power in their lawsuit against President Trump. Public Knowledge is a strong supporter of the independent regulatory agencies as a center of expertise and policymaking that keeps up with the pace of technological innovation, and we are grateful for the courageous stand they have taken.

We are incredibly proud to recognize the vision and dedication of this year’s honorees.
