Public Knowledge hosts the Annual IP3 Awards to celebrate the work of those who have made significant contributions in the three areas of IP: Intellectual Property, Information Policy, and Internet Protocol. In 2025, we presented the Information Policy Award to Dr. Alondra Nelson, an academic, policy advisor, and writer renowned for her transformative research and leadership in science, technology, and social inequality. Dr. Nelson is the Harold F. Linder Professor at the Institute for Advanced Study, an independent research center in Princeton, New Jersey, where she founded and leads the Science, Technology, and Social Values Lab. As a policy advisor, Dr. Nelson has provided guidance to local, state, federal, and international governments, legislators, civil society, and others. You can view her remarks.

We presented the Intellectual Policy Award to Sarah Jeong, a trained lawyer, journalist, and author known for her work on law, technology, and internet culture. Ms. Jeong is currently the deputy features editor at The Verge. Previously, she worked as a writer for The New York Times and Vice Motherboard. She is also the author of “The Internet of Garbage,” a book about speech policy and content moderation. Her years of coverage on the intersection of technology and copyright law have helped to educate the public on the challenges and benefits of balancing copyright law in a digital age.

We presented the Internet Protocol Award to Dr. Joseph Lorenzo Hall, Distinguished Technologist at the Internet Society, a global charity that promotes the development of the internet as a global technical infrastructure, a resource to enrich people’s lives, and a force for good in society. Dr. Hall leads the Safe and Secure Internet portfolio at the Internet Society, including advocacy promoting end-to-end encryption, guiding constructive internet policy, and defending the internet at a variety of organizations including the United Nations. He is part of the leadership team, ensuring that the Internet Society remains relevant and impactful while striving for excellence. He also contributes substantive technical, legal, and policy expertise to the Internet Society’s programs.

Finally, we presented a President’s Award to Former FTC Commissioner Alvaro Bedoya for his steadfast commitment to consumer protection and fair competition in the digital age. Mr. Bedoya has focused his career on helping those living paycheck to paycheck, including small business owners, working people, and community leaders. He also founded the Center on Privacy & Technology at Georgetown Law and helped establish the U.S. Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Privacy as its first chief counsel. His essay on the subject, “Privacy as Civil Right,” is featured in textbooks used in U.S. law schools. As a strong supporter of independent regulatory agencies, we are grateful for the courageous stand he has taken in defending the FTC’s independence.

In 2025, we also presented a President’s Award to FTC Commissioner Rebecca Kelly Slaughter for her steadfast commitment to consumer protection and fair competition in the digital age. She boasts extensive experience in competition, privacy, and consumer protection. She builds consensus for a progressive vision and staunchly advocates for our nation’s consumers and workers. A proponent of greater resources, transparency, and comprehensive use of the FTC’s authorities, she remains outspoken about the growing threats to competition and the broad abuse of consumers’ data. As a strong supporter of independent regulatory agencies, we are grateful for the courageous stand she has taken in defending the FTC’s independence.
