Public Knowledge and New America’s Open Technology Institute filed comments in response to the Federal Communication Commission’s Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on “Authorizing Permissive Use of the ‘Next Generation’ Broadcast Television Standard” released on July 7, 2022. These comments examine the ways in which an immediate shift to Advanced Television Systems Committee standard (ATSC) 3.0 for digital television transmission would negatively impact consumers, while expressing doubt that such a shift is in the public interest rather than a purely commercial one for broadcasters.
