Public Knowledge President and Co-Founder Gigi B. Sohn today announced the start of a new PK endeavor – the Creators’ Freedom Project.
Based in Nashville, the project will focus on helping artists promote themselves using innovative techniques. Alex Curtis, Public Knowledge’s Director of Policy and New Media, will be the project’s Director.
Sohn said: “With this project, Public Knowledge is side-stepping the usual copyright and telecom policy issues and focusing on what we think really matters to artists — helping them find ways make a living from their creativity.”
Among other activities, the Project will:
• Work directly with artists and tell their stories
• Partner with experts, and providers of online tools and services
• Host local workshops, tutorials & discussions
• Stream webinars for artists
Curtis said the hands-on approach allows Public Knowledge to nurture a series of “real world” examples of how balanced copyright policies can encourage creativity. The Project hopes to create case studies that can serve as models that are easy to replicate.
He added, “The Creators’ Freedom Project is an opportunity for Public Knowledge to develop something that directly impacts a community of creators. The project is developing at a critical time of changing business models and platforms.”
