The following statement is attributed to Gigi B. Sohn, president and co-founder of Public Knowledge:

“We are very pleased that the Senate Commerce Committee has held its nomination hearing for Julius Genachowski to be the chairman of the Federal Communications Commission and current Comr. Robert McDowell to be renominated for another term.

“We were heartened by Senator Pryor's statement at the end of the hearing that the Committee wants to move quickly to collect questions and answers from the nominees.

“We hope the Committee moves quickly to approve the nominations and the full Senate follows up with a confirmation vote soon after. We look forward to both of these nominees providing essential leadership on the issues that currently are, and will be, before the Commission — issues which are vitally important to our democracy, our culture and most salient now, our economy. The telecommunications sector is crucial to our national economy, and leadership at the FCC is desperately needed to fulfill that promise.”
