The following statement is attributed to Gigi B. Sohn, president and co-founder of Public Knowledge:

“Everyone who favors a free and open Internet should be gratified by the announcement this morning by House Commerce Committee Chairman Henry Waxman that he supports legislation to enact Net Neutrality into law. Chairman Waxman's decision to cosponsor legislation preserving non-discrimination and openness should serve as a powerful signal of how important these principles are.

“A free and non-discriminatory Internet should not exist at the good will of the telecommunications carriers. Net Neutrality legislation is necessary and we hope that other members of Congress will also cosponsor the legislation sponsored by Reps. Ed Markey and Anna Eshoo.
“There was a great deal of investment and innovation during the Internet's early days when non-discrimination laws governed the Internet, and we expect that pattern to continue when the principles are reinstated through a Net Neutrality law.”
