Today, Public Knowledge launches a call for applications for the 2017 class of the online Open Internet Course. The free Spanish-language course will train digital rights activists in Latin America to strategically advocate for Open Internet policies from a human rights perspective. Hosted by Peer 2 Peer University (P2PU), this course explores strategic planning, SMART goals development, internet governance, cybersecurity, net neutrality, spectrum management, internet access and more.

The Open Internet Course features updated materials and resources as well as interactive components, including engaging expert videos, webinar sessions, and a discussion forum, to facilitate learning. This is the third year of the course, which has trained a total of 60 participants in the Spring of 2015 and Summer of 2016.

The following may be attributed to Melanie Penagos, International Policy Associate at Public Knowledge and course facilitator:

“We are very proud to launch the third installment of our online Spanish-language course and continue to engage and empower the next generation of digital rights experts, policymakers, and advocates in Latin America. We believe that investing in this type of capacity building effort is a crucial element to help increase citizens’ strategic engagement in internet policy debates in their local communities.

“The Open Internet Course provides an introduction to a variety of internet governance-related issues and also serves as a forum for advocates to exchange ideas and best practices on how to collectively promote an open and secure internet. Based on our past classes, it is evident that the course truly succeeds in encouraging participants to learn from one another and gain a better understanding of the wider regional context in which they are operating in, thereby strengthening community ties.”

The following may be attributed to Gene Kimmelman, President and CEO of Public Knowledge:

“Our main goal is to help form and engage a new generation of leaders to propose a positive, open internet policy agenda founded on human rights. We are grateful for the support we’ve received for the Open Internet Course and for the overwhelming demand from eager students. We hope that those of you who are new to the tech policy field or are interested in internet-related issues and becoming engaged in the advocacy space will sign up for this course.”

Interested participants may register now until January 20. The course begins February 6 and runs 13 weeks. Learn more here.
