The following statement is attributed to Gigi B. Sohn, president and co-founder of Public Knowledge:

“We are pleased that the FCC today took the first steps to help create a more competitive environment for Internet-based video and to provide more choices for consumers.  The proposed ‘gateway’ device the Commission discussed will help because it will allow consumers to change providers more easily and will promote consumer choice in next generation video devices.  We are gratified that the Commission recognized Public Knowledge’s contribution to the debate.

“We also commend the Commission for moving ahead on a CableCARD regime with new rules that will help consumers with the transition to more advanced devices, which should also expand consumer capability to use new services. We hope the Commision will not undercut the new regime by continuing to grant broad waivers from the CableCARD obligations cable companies must follow.”
