Today, President Joe Biden nominated Jonathan Kanter as Assistant Attorney General for the Antitrust Division at the Department of Justice. Mr. Kanter is a leading antitrust attorney and outspoken proponent of aggressive antitrust enforcement and competition policy. His advocacy, including testimony before the House Antitrust Subcommittee and the Federal Trade Commission, has been influential in the movement to reform the antitrust laws and address monopoly power across the economy. He previously served as the antitrust co-chair at Paul Weiss LLP and as an attorney for the FTC’s Bureau of Competition. Public Knowledge commends Mr. Kanter for his decade of advocacy and looks forward to working with him and the Antitrust Division to promote the public interest.
The following can be attributed to Charlotte Slaiman, Competition Policy Director at Public Knowledge:
“We are very pleased that President Biden will nominate Jonathan Kanter to this crucial position. Kanter has the right expertise and holds the right values for the moment we are experiencing in tech and communications policy. The public needs an Assistant Attorney General with both strong legal know-how and the requisite boldness to challenge gatekeepers and consolidated markets, including broadband providers and digital platforms. Jonathan Kanter fits that bill.
“We are eager to see the great things Mr. Kanter can accomplish in his new role. The Senate should move quickly to confirm him so that he can get to work on the important priorities we have for the Antitrust Division. We look forward to working with Mr. Kanter to make his advocacy a government policy reality.”
