Today, the U.S. Senate voted to confirm Anna Gomez as a Commissioner for the Federal Communications Commission. Ms. Gomez possesses a depth of knowledge and experience on telecommunications and technology issues, making her an excellent choice to protect consumers in the digital era. Public Knowledge expects Ms. Gomez to support Chair Rosenworcel and the administration’s stated goals for broadband authority and oversight at the FCC, including net neutrality, universal service, affordable broadband access, and broader public interest protections.

The following can be attributed to Chris Lewis, President and CEO at Public Knowledge:

“Congratulations to Anna Gomez on her successful confirmation to join the Federal Communications Commission. Ms. Gomez is a talented and experienced telecommunications attorney who has served in a variety of key positions in tech and telecom policy over the years. She is also publicly committed to supporting FCC authority over broadband to preserve an open internet and close the digital divide. This is critically important as the long delay in filling the five-person commission has left many key broadband policy priorities unfinished.

“Ms. Gomez’s experience will let her hit the ground running on important issues facing the FCC that require a five member commission, from the digital discrimination rulemaking, to the future of the Universal Service Fund, to nuanced spectrum policy that promotes innovation and competition. The public expects that the FCC is a strong regulator for the public interest in the broadband market as prices continue to rise and some communities are left without reliable high-speed connectivity. We are excited for the diversity and experience Ms. Gomez brings to the agency. Her appointment creates an opportunity for the Commission to tackle these challenging topics that fulfills the expectations of broadband users in every community.”
